Ipswich, June 15, 2017.
Broomhill Pool has taken its place among Britain’s most loved locations and buildings, being immortalised by illustrator Dave Thompson.
Thompson’s work revisits a classic era of poster design, recreated in the vibrant tones of 1950s travel art. Ipswich’s Grade II lido has been added to his portfolio, with a design that captures the pool’s glorious past and exciting future.
Dave Thompson said: “I’ve really enjoyed illustrating such an iconic building and it is pleasing to add another Lido to my collection”. Thompson consulted the Broomhill Pool Trust about the lido’s past, plus local firm KLH Architects - who is project lead for the pool’s restoration - for its future design. The image therefore unites the pool’s opening in 1938 and its planned restoration in 2018/2019. Fusion Lifestyle, the registered charity that is spearheading the proposals, will be shortly be submitting their second stage application for funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the application for planning permission for the project. Brockwell Park Lido run by Fusion Lifestyle has previously featured in Thompson’s work.
Alan Wilkinson, Lead Architect at KLH Architects, Ipswich said “Dave’s image of the Broomhill lido is an evocative and heart-warming tribute to this beautiful Ipswich asset,  I am going to put a print on my Xmas list!”
Mark Ling, Chairman of the Broomhill Pool Trust said “Dave’s work is a real “Who’s who” of Britain’s top landmarks. This is a stunning design and a real coup for Ipswich”.
The new Broomhill Pool design is available to purchase as a print or in an extensive range of merchandise at Needham Market based Star Editions Ltd is the global art distributor handling Thompson’s portfolio, along with many other notable artists. Star Editions are hoping to find numerous local shops and outlets to help distribute the products locally.
Will Marston, CEO of Star Editions added “Star Editions were delighted to be able to work in partnership
with Dave Thompson and Broomhill Pool Trust. As a Suffolk based manufacturer the project appealed both for the company, and on a personal level as well, (as I remember swimming there!). And even more so, in being able to play, even just a small part, in bringing this iconic Lido back to life”.
